Australia’s Data Center Pipeline Raises Renewable Financing Stakes

Image: TokenPost

A potential data-center buildout in Australia could draw A$150 billion in investment by 2030 and lift power demand, sharpening financing questions as approved renewable projects remain short on customer contracts. The pipeline includes about six gigawatts of potential capacity. The central estimate is about A$150 billion in nominal investment by 2030, based on announced projects. The figure is not committed spending: some projects may not proceed at their proposed scale or on their original schedule. About 165 data centers used five terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity in fiscal 2026, equal to roughly 3% of operational electricity consumption in the National Electricity Market (NEM). In a most-likely demand scenario, data-center use reaches about 15 TWh, or 7.8%, in fiscal 2030 and 34 TWh, or 13%, in fiscal 2036.
