Google has announced a major quantum computing breakthrough, demonstrating a technique that reduces errors by a factor of 40 and could help make powerful quantum computers more practical. The advance comes as researchers increasingly warn that future quantum machines could undermine the cryptography securing bitcoin and other digital assets. Google Quantum AI said Thursday that researchers successfully demonstrated a technique called “magic state cultivation” on the company’s Willow quantum processor, overcoming a longstanding obstacle to developing large-scale, error-corrected quantum computers. The research, published in the scientific journal Science , achieved a 40-fold reduction in errors compared with quantum states that had not undergone the process. Researchers also produced so-called T-states with a record logical fidelity of 99.99%, demonstrating exceptionally high accuracy in a critical component of quantum computation.
