Zcash NU7 upgrade cuts block target to 25 seconds, introduces fee reserve

Zcash has completed its NU7 network upgrade, activating key changes designed to improve transaction speed and sustainability for the privacy-focused blockchain. The upgrade went live on the mainnet at block 3,543,405, mined at 02:34 UTC on November 6, 2026, and brings a significant shift in how blocks are produced and how transaction fees are allocated across the network. The NU7 protocol upgrade reduces the target block interval from the previous 75 seconds to 25 seconds, tripling the potential transaction frequency on the Zcash network. This adjustment aims to support faster and more scalable payment processing, but the network’s confirmation times can still fluctuate based on mining difficulty. Initial post-upgrade data from CoinDesk showed that the first 225 blocks averaged about 39 seconds per block, reflecting ongoing adjustment in mining difficulty.
