Italy’s proposed exit tax has an €800K threshold – Who could qualify?

Italy has proposed a 2027 budget bill that would extend an exit-tax regime to certain individuals leaving the country. This will include unrealized crypto gains on crypto assets. This tax could be applied to residents who have lived in Italy at least six out of the last ten years. The proposal would be effective from the 1st of January 2027. This is if they possess covered assets valued at €800,000 or greater. The exit tax is an unusual application of capital gains tax. It will be possible for authorities to impose a tax based upon the value of your investment prior to your departure. Authorities will use the purchase cost of your asset and the current market value of your asset to determine how much of an unrealized gain exists.
