Bitcoin qualifies as property in a robbery case under Thai law, the Supreme Court has ruled. The decision upholds a 10-year prison sentence after attackers forced a visitor on Koh Samui to transfer cryptocurrency worth around $50,000. Judgment No. 4929/2569 was included in a court judgment summary dated October 28. According to Thai news site Bitcoin Addict, the judgment summary does not indicate when the court made its decision. This case was about the theft of 2.480801 BTC in September 2022. The defendants’ claim that cryptocurrency has no value and cannot be stolen was disregarded by the judges. The controversy was over whether digital data can be regarded as property in a robbery charge. The accused claimed that Bitcoin has no intrinsic worth and hence made the criminal charge baseless.
