Nearly 20% of American families with debt have fallen behind on loan payments, according to the Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, marking the highest rate since 2010 even as household wealth reached new highs. The latest data from the Federal Reserve showed that 19.6% of borrowing families reported at least one late loan payment in the past 12 months, a significant increase from 12.2% in 2022. More severe payment issues also became more common, with 8.2% of indebted families now at least 60 days delinquent, up from 4.9% two years earlier.
