A 22-year-old Sacramento man told investigators he fell asleep while using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) feature, known as FSD, before his car struck a patrol vehicle, seriously injuring two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers. The collision happened shortly before midnight Tuesday, Oct. 13, near Fairfield, California — about 2:45 a.m. ET (06:45 UTC) on Oct. 14. Dashcam footage shows the Tesla entering a four-lane closure on eastbound Interstate 80, passing flares, cones and emergency lights before striking the rear of a Dodge Charger patrol car. The two officers inside suffered serious injuries. Investigators planned to download the Tesla’s vehicle data and onboard footage to determine how the crash unfolded. FSD is a Level 2 driver-assistance system that requires drivers to keep monitoring the vehicle.
