Decentralized finance, or DeFi, lets people lend, borrow, trade and earn interest through software instead of a bank. DefiLlama showed $93.9 billion locked in DeFi protocols on 21 September 2026. A day later the figure was $96.3 billion. That is 45.7% below the November 2021 peak of $177.5 billion. It equals about 3.3% of the $2.96 trillion crypto market.
