The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has released two consultations focusing on the regulation of decentralized finance (DeFi) and crypto assets. These consultations aim to clarify which activities will require FCA authorization before the full regulatory regime is enacted in October 2027. Market participants have until November 18 to submit their responses. This move is part of the UK’s ongoing efforts to establish a comprehensive framework for cryptoasset businesses, particularly those involved in platforms, dealing, safeguarding, staking, and stablecoin issuance. The FCA has emphasized that the use of automation, smart contracts, or distributed ledgers does not inherently exempt activities from needing authorization. The requirements will be based on the functions performed and the specific arrangements involved.
