Nvidia’s dominance of artificial intelligence computing has never depended on GPUs alone. For more than a decade, the company has built a software ecosystem around CUDA that makes its hardware easier for developers to use, optimize and deploy at scale. That software advantage has become one of the strongest barriers protecting Nvidia from competitors attempting to break into the AI accelerator market. Now Google and Amazon are attacking that barrier directly. Both companies have introduced new open-source tools designed to let developers run PyTorch workloads more naturally on their own AI processors. Google has opened TorchTPU for its Tensor Processing Units, while Amazon Web Services has launched TorchNeuron for its Trainium chips.
