Crypto Returns by Year Statistics: Bitcoin, Ethereum and Major Assets

Crypto has produced some of the highest investment returns of the past decade. It has also produced some of the largest losses. Bitcoin posted several calendar years with gains above 100%. Ethereum rose more than fivefold in two different years. Solana gained almost 900% in 2023, and XRP rose more than 250% in 2024. The losses were just as large. Bitcoin lost more than 60% in both 2018 and 2022. Ethereum fell more than 80% in 2018, and Solana dropped more than 90% in 2022. Traditional assets looked very different. The S&P 500’s worst calendar year from 2018 to 2025 was a loss of about 18% in 2022. Gold finished that year almost flat, while U.S. bonds fell about 13%.
