A Bitcoin Price of Zero Would Wipe Out Holder Value and Test the Network

Image: TokenPost

A hypothetical fall in Bitcoin (BTC) to zero would eliminate holders’ asset value, while the network’s continued operation would depend on miners and other participants continuing to run it. Bitcoin’s market capitalization was about $1.64 trillion in the UTC-dated daily record for Oct. 15, 2026. Market capitalization is the price multiplied by circulating supply. It is a valuation at the prevailing price, not a pool of cash invested in Bitcoin or available for withdrawal. At a zero price, that valuation would also be zero; it would not mean an equal amount of cash had vanished from the broader economy. The direct losses would fall on people and institutions holding bitcoin. BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust held 770,792 BTC, valued at about $67.4 billion, as of Dec. 31, 2025.
